Wonderful, Merciful Savior

Wonderful, Merciful Savior

This song, made popular by the music trio Selah, was written back in 1989. Do you remember it? You may not hear it much on today’s radio stations, but perhaps you sing it in your local church.

It has enjoyed popularity in many places around the globe in the decades since Dawn Rodgers was inspired with both the melody, and most of the words, one day during her quiet time. Later, her husband, Eric Wise, helped arrange it, and…voilà!

The song has been translated into several languages, including Spanish, French, German, Hungarian, and Russian.

The theme is a universal one: adoration and gratitude to our wonderful, merciful Savior.

Notice how the authors worship the Triune God: Jesus the Son, the Spirit, and lastly, the Father. The chorus then states: “You are the One that we praise, You are the One we adore…”, calling attention to the fact that although God is three Person, He is yet One God.

Singing in this way to the Lord is a beautiful way to extol the virtues of the Lord, showing our appreciation for the unique attributes of each Member of the Trinity.

In verse one, Jesus: our Redeemer, Savior, and Friend.

Verse two extols the Holy Spirit: our Counselor, Comforter, and Keeper.

And in verse three we sing to the Father: Infinite, Loving, and Faithful.

I hope you will add this beautiful song to your practice of praise. For the entire Salty playlist, click here.

Wonderful, merciful Savior
Precious Redeemer and Friend
Who would have thought that a Lamb could
Rescue the souls of men
Oh, You rescue the souls of men
Counselor, Comforter, Keeper
Spirit we long to embrace
You offer hope when our hearts have
Hopelessly lost the way
Oh, we hopelessly lost the way
[Chorus]
You are the one that we praise
You are the one we adore
You give the healing and grace
Our hearts always hunger for
Oh, our hearts always hunger for
Almighty, infinite Father
Faithfully loving Your own
Here in our weakness You find us
Falling before Your throne
Oh, we’re falling before Your throne[Chorus]
