You’re Beautiful

Today’s song to add to our Practice of Praise is a modern-day classic: Phil Wickham’s song “You’re Beautiful. “

This song is truly a gem. It does what Wickham intended–it helps bring God’s children right into the throne room of our beautiful God.

First Beautiful Song

This song is an awesome”first song of the day”. When we awaken to its rich chords, Phil’s soulful voice, and the simple words, it can’t help but elicit a smile. (HINT: why not set your alarm to the Phil Wickham Station? It’s a great way to wake up!)

Harnessing those first, scattered, awakening thoughts and conforming them with what God’s Spirit tells us in scripture is very powerful.

Left to myself, I might awaken with any number of thoughts. “Ouch” is a prevalent one. And from there, grumbles, worries, over-thinking, etc. can get to much band-width. If I let them.

But we don’t have to let them!

His Beauty

Below are just some of the lyrics of this gorgeous song. If you are familiar with it already, you know that Phil talks about the beauty of God by remarking on His beauty in creation.

This is a common theme for psalmists, hymn writers, poets, and modern-day worship leaders, as well. After all, as scripture tells us,

“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims the work of His hands.”

Psalms 19:1

You’re Beautiful…So Very Beautiful

The lyrics celebrate:

  • the beauty of sunrise in verse one,
  • the moonlit skies in verse two,
  • the beauty of God’s stunning grace in our blessed Lord’s crucifixion in verse three,
  • and then in verse four, it wraps up with:

“When we arrive at eternity’s shore,
Where death is just a memory, and tears are no more–
We’ll enter in as the wedding bells ring!
Your bride will come together, and we’ll sing:
You’re beautiful
Oh, You’re beautiful…”

This song helps us look forward to that day, when we are reunited with those saints who have gone on before us, and then the best part–when we behold our beautiful God, face to Face.
